Hallmark Details of a Gitman Shirt
More than 80 minutes and 50 steps go into the creation of a Gitman shirt, which is made of 25 separate pieces.
Inside Our Process
Receiving
Bolts of fabric arrive from around the world before being rolled out and inspected with the utmost attention to detail.
Cutting
These fabrics then move to the cutting floor where they are spread and cut into the 25 different pieces that make up a Gitman shirt.
Finishing
The pieces are then dispersed throughout the factory and our sewers continue the 50 step process as the shirt begins to take shape.
Inspection
Every shirt is hand-trimmed and examined for quality and consistency before being steamed, hand-folded and packaged.

We work closely with the world’s finest mills to create fabrics that uphold our reputation for quality, comfort and style.

Featured Fabrics
Oxford
Perhaps the most iconic and recognizable of our fabrics, Oxford is a highly durable cloth with a lightly textured finish. It has been used continuously by Gitman since 1978, offering the utmost in comfort and durability.
Pinpoint
Pinpoint uses a tighter weave with finer yarns, offering the same comfort and resilience as Oxford with a lighter finish. We have used this fabric for over 35 years and created an iconic shirt that lasts a lifetime.
Broadcloth
Broadcloth is a tightly woven and highly durable fabric with a smooth texture and lightweight finish. One of our most popular fabrics for dress shirts, it's pristine appearance is well suited to refined business attire.
Twill
Twill is a lightly textured fabric with an intricate weave that creates subtle diagonal patterns across the surface. It has a slight sheen and a soft finish that tends to remain relatively resistant to wrinkling.
Chambray
Originally worn by blue collar workers due its hard wearing nature, chambray is produced by interweaving a colored yarn in the warp and white yarn in the weft to create a textured, denim-like appearance.
Performance
Our performance fabrics offer the perfect blend of form and function. Crafted primarily from natural fibers, they provide a superior range of movement while retaining their shape and breathability.

Our shirts are offered in a wide variety of sizes and fits to suit your personal preference and physical stature.

Collar
It takes fifteen different sewing operations and a total of four separate pressings to get a collar on a Gitman shirt.
Button Down
Created by polo players in the late 1800’s, the button down collar remains a staple of American style. Our version of this enduring classic stands three inches tall to create a perfect roll with or without a tie.
Button Under
Our button under collar combines the functionality and silhouette of a button down collar with hidden buttons placed beneath the collar that keep the points firmly in place using small loops of fabric.
Point
The traditional point collar rose to popularity in the 1920’s as the go-to choice for salarymen and others who frequently wore a tie. The narrow spread and elongated points draw the eyes down for a slimming appearance.
Medium Spread
One of our most popular styles for dress and sport shirts, the medium spread collar lends itself to both business and casual attire. It’s perfectly at home under a jacket and can also be worn with or without a tie.
Widespread
The widespread collar is the most modern of the group and well suited to smart business attire. Extra spacing between the collar points draws more attention to the tie and has a broadening effect around the neckline.
Cutaway
First appearing in the 1930’s, the cutaway collar offers a distinct and contemporary look. The shorter stance and wider spread allows the collar to remain neatly tucked under the lapel of a jacket.
Cuffs
The cuffs on a Gitman shirt are fused with a high quality interlining before being pressed and precisely set by hand.
Barrel
The barrel cuff is our standard style with a rounded edge and single button fastening. It works equally well for both dress and sport shirts.
Adjustable
The adjustable cuff has the same shape as our barrel cuff with an additional button allowing the cuff to be tightened if needed.
Mitered
The mitered cuff is a slightly elevated version of the barrel cuff with the edges cut at an angle for a sharp and elegant appearance.
French
The French cuff is our most formal option, requiring cufflinks to fasten the cuff and allowing you to add a touch of your own personal style.
Front
Placket
A placket front uses a separate piece of fabric to hold the buttons in place and add stability to the front of the shirt.
French
A French front offers a cleaner aesthetic with the material on the front of the shirt folded to the underside so no stitching is visible.
Back
Center Pleat
A classic design detail where additional fabric is added to the back of shirt to create a rectangular fold at the center.
Shoulder Pleat
The shoulder pleat is a more discreet option where the pleats are placed at the shoulder blades just below the yoke.

Measuring Guide
To find your correct size, we recommend that you take measurements from a shirt you already own and compare it with those listed below. When taking measurements, lay the garment on a flat surface and do as follows:
Step 1: Collar
Unbutton the shirt and spread the collar so it lays open and flat, then measure the distance from the button to buttonhole.
Step 2: Shoulder
With the shirt laid flat on its front, measure the distance from one shoulder seam to the center of the collar and then to the other shoulder seam.
Step 3: Chest
With buttons fastened, measure directly across the chest at 1 inch below the arm hole.
Step 4: Waist
With buttons fastened, measure directly across the shirt at 8 inches below the arm hole.
Step 5: Length
Measure the distance straight down the back of the shirt from the base of the collar to the hem line.
Step 6: Sleeve
With the shirt laid flat on its front, measure from the center of the collar to the shoulder seam and from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff.
